Award Amount: Allowance provided for travel and living expenses
Purpose: To provide additional exposure to advanced molecular diagnostics techniques and quantitative testing (e.g., PCR, ER, PR, Her2).
This elective will take place in a state-of-the-art laboratory located in Redwood City, California. Recipient will work under the direction of Dr. Frederick Baehner, Director of Immunohistochemistry Cancer Center Core Laboratory, University of California, San Francisco.
After completion of this rotation, resident awardees will:
- Understand how individualized genomic profiling of tumor tissue can help improve cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management.
- Obtain hands-on experience in quantitative testing, involving RT-PCR.
- Gain working knowledge of the research and development in product development.
- Gain working knowledge of commercialization of a clinical assay.
Time Commitment: Four (4) weeks.
Eligibility: Pathology residents and those in fellowships who have at least 24 months of training in surgical pathology and related areas. Applicants must be a CAP Junior Member or have an application pending.
Selection Process:
- Merit of application and narrative
- Educational value to the applicant
- Applicant background — current knowledge of pathology practice and hematopathology
- Program director’s recommendation

- A letter of recommendation and documentation from the director of the applicant’s residency program indicating that salary and benefits will be supported during the award period.
- A narrative, not to exceed two pages, describing:
- Applicant’s interest in diagnostic testing, why this experience is desired, and how it will enhance their training in pathology.
- Description of any previous experience that will be helpful to fulfill the elective objectives.
- Benefit to society and the practice of pathology that this experience will provide.
- Why the Foundation support is needed and what other means of support are available.
